Today, I opened up the doors of my fridge and was in shock over how much produce I let get to the expiration date.  We are all guilty of this at one point or another in our lives.  Did you know that nearly 40% of all american produce ends up in the trash?  That is a lot of unnecessary waste.

Luckily, I turned my produce breakdown into a breakthrough! I pulled out my juicer and made the most of my ALMOST rotten fruits and veggies.   Weather you have a cold press, or a centrifugal - don't be afraid to throw it all in!  Drinking fresh juice allows for key nutrients to be easily absorbed into the system as well as acting as a natural “flush” for your intestines.

Here are some key tips to remember-

  1. Add plenty of lemon juice - it acts as a natural preservative.

  2. Seal finished juice in an airtight container to avoid oxidation.

  3. Never juice anything rotten!

  4. Most ingredients go together - be creative with what you’ve got!

  5. Drink within 3 days since this at home juice will not be pasteurized.

And remember- when it is all said and done, COMPOST! This includes rotten produce, the leftovers and the pulp from the juicer.

This simple solution is a great way to help the environment while getting all of our micro-nutrients in with just one glass of juice. Who knew mushy apples could taste so good?
